What's your Community spirit like?

Dear fellow members of our local Business Community,

We are now in the ninth month of living through the Covid 19 crisis and to say that these have been unprecedented times seems to be a little bit of an understatement.

Like most businesses we have found ourselves doing all we can to adapt to this challenging economic climate, whilst fighting to keep our business afloat.  Amidst our struggle it has been heart-warming to see the positive effects of this situation.  I have been amazed and delighted to watch the way people have rallied to help within the community, build stronger relationships with neighbours and support those who really needed help. This return to community spirit was unexpected and something that I had not envisaged would remerge within our society. We have also started to re-evaluate where we shop, and I suspect that support for our great local high street retailers must be at an all-time high.  I am confident that some of these positive behavioural changes will continue long after we emerge from this period.

However, it has occurred to me that as a business community we have not really extended this spirit to incorporate business transactions and I feel sure that we could do more to support each other in a business to business capacity. Why not broaden our sense of community spirit to include our business transactions? We have some fantastic local businesses, so why not consider them as our first option when we are looking for a product or a service?

Research on spending by local authorities shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business.

As a Director of a small business I am committing to always considering local suppliers first for both services and products.  I hope that this concept will appeal to you too and I would welcome the opportunity to engage with you, to explore your thoughts on ways that we can work together and support each other, as we build a stronger and more sustainable business community.

Kind regards

Susan Curran

Operations Director
